Rice University’s Baker Institute Selects Tendenci® Open Source CMS

Baker-Institute.pngHOUSTON, October 15, 2013 – Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, one of the premier nonpartisan public policy think tanks in the country, has kicked its visibility efforts into high gear by launching a dynamic new website, http://bakerinstitute.org/, powered by Tendenci (www.tendenci.com), the open source Content Management System (CMS) for cause-related organizations. The goal of the upgrade was to redefine how the Web can be used to connect the work of think tank researchers to the array of outcomes of their work – and tie it all back to real time events percolating around the globe.

The website, featuring more than 1,000 pieces of research, 800 videos and hundreds of events, was designed and developed by Schipul – the Web Marketing Company (www.schipul.com).

“We are looking to make a bold statement, build awareness and ensure our online presence conveys to the world how strong the work is that we do,” said Ryan Kirksey, director of operations and finance with Rice University’s Baker Institute. “As an open source solution, this platform gives us freedom to develop and maintain the site however we choose.”

The Baker Institute leverages many of Tendenci CMS’ unique capabilities. The organization can manage and organize website content without having to go through a third party, and Tendenci has built-in automatic search engine optimization features. The site also includes donation and fundraising management that makes it easy for users to contribute financially, online event management that enables the Baker Institute to quickly and easily add events to the online calendar, allow registration, take payment and access registrant information.

The new website also includes rich media management to make it easy to upload, view and search photos and videos, and responsive design to ensure users have a consistent and positive experience regardless of the device they use to access the site.

“Tendenci offered us a platform to feature our multimedia in a way that is both visually pleasing and functional,” said Kirksey. “We do more than 100 events per year, each of which is streamed online and then archived for on-demand playback, along with photos. The new website makes all this accessible to those who can’t come here to Houston to see what we do.”

Tendenci was released as an open source CMS to give cause-related organizations, including NPOs and associations, greater freedom and control over their online presence. Tendenci has more than 1 million users and powers hundreds of websites for nonprofit organizations and associations around the world, including Metropolitan New York Library Council (www.metro.org), Houston Technology Center (www.houstontech.org) and DePelchin Children's Center (www.depelchin.org).

Tendenci® CMS Platform Powers Website for Montessori School of Downtown

Each campus uses easily updated calendars, school lunch menus and photo galleries to reflect their unique personality

Tendenci Powers Education WebsiteHOUSTON, August 14, 2013 – Montessori School of Downtown, the fastest growing school program in Texas, is preparing for the new school year with a vibrant new website, https://www.montessoridowntown.com, which is powered by Tendenci (www.tendenci.com), the open source Content Management System (CMS) for nonprofit organizations (NPOs). The new website is helping the campuses of Montessori School Downtown to strengthen bonds with the families of their existing students and to provide all the information necessary to help other families decide if Montessori School of Downtown is right for them.

The upgraded website for Montessori School of Downtown, which has campuses in downtown Houston, Medical Center, Clear Lake, Pearland and Silverlake, was designed by Schipul - The Web Marketing Company (www.schipul.com), a leading Web marketing and software development company based in Houston.

"With Tendenci, our new website is more user friendly and, because it is easy to update and add new content regularly, our parent community is encouraged to visit regularly to stay informed, which is good for everyone involved," said Barbara Bergeron, Director with Montessori School Downtown. "Each of the campuses has a unique personality, so it is very powerful for staff at each campus to be able to keep their online calendars, newsletters and lunch menus updated and to post photos of events themselves without having to go through a webmaster."

Despite having a great deal of information available for parents and families considering sending their children to Montessori School of Downtown, the simple design of the website features big, bright photos of children and makes it easy to navigate to find upcoming events, news and announcements, downloadable enrollment and medical forms, and testimonials from parents.

Montessori School of Downtown, which has a child-centered philosophy that emphasizes individualized learning, is the latest education-related organization to select Tendenci CMS. Others include Beaumont Independent School District, Castle Hills First Baptist School, Children's Assessment Center, Houston Public Library Foundation, Inclusive Schools Network and World Class Learning Academy.

Last year, Tendenci was released as an open source CMS to give NPOs greater freedom and control over their online presence. Tendenci has more than 1 million users and currently powers hundreds of websites for nonprofit organizations and associations around the world, including Metropolitan New York Library Council (www.metro.org), Houston Technology Center (www.houstontech.org) and Komen Houston (www.komen-houston.org).

Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans Launches Upgraded Website Powered by Tendenci® CMS Platform

Content Management System purpose-built for nonprofits provides "absolute control"

AAMA.jpgHOUSTON, June 25, 2013 – The Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans (AAMA), which inspires and empowers at-risk Latinos to pursue their potential and achieve success, today announced the launch of its upgraded website, https://www.aama.org. The site is powered by Tendenci (www.tendenci.com), the open source Content Management System (CMS) for nonprofit organizations (NPOs).

To give NPOs such as AAMA greater control over their online presence, Tendenci CMS was released as an open source product last year. AAMA's upgraded website was designed by Schipul - The Web Marketing Company (www.schipul.com), a leading Web marketing and software development company based in Houston.

"With Tendenci, we have absolute control over all our content – from the rotator on the home page to way events are promoted," said Kathryn Butcher, vice president, public relations with AAMA. "We want to encourage frequent visits from people who care about at-risk Latinos, so the new website is dynamic and designed to be updated frequently. We are very pleased."

Like many nonprofit organization websites, the AAMA site needs to interact with multiple audiences without being confusing or overly complicated. In addition to the main website that provides information to volunteers, financial contributors and others interested in helping Latinos become productive contributors, the upgrade included the development of a subsidiary site for AAMA's Sanchez Charter School, which provides critical information to current and prospective students and their families.

"It was essential that the website make it easy for the school staff to take ownership of their own content without sacrificing consistency with the main AAMA site in terms of branding or how the story is told," said Butcher. "The Schipul team came up with a good solution that ensures the school site can focus on things that matter to the school community and the main AAMA site can focus on the overall mission of the organization."

The website features prominent buttons encouraging visitors to donate and to sign up for AAMA's newsletter. It utilizes Tendenci's calendar event management capabilities to promote and manage registration and payment (when applicable) for upcoming events. The upgraded website also features digital media management package that makes it easy for the association to upload and share photos as well as a job board for posting positions and easily searching for listed jobs.

Tendenci CMS has more than 1 million users and currently powers hundreds of websites for nonprofit organizations and associations around the world, including Metropolitan New York Library Council (www.metro.org), Houston Technology Center (www.houstontech.org) and Komen Houston (www.komen-houston.org).

Tendenci® CMS Platform Powers New Website for International Association of Innovation Professionals

Website essential for membership management and recruitment for startup association

International Association of Innovation Professionals Tendenci WebsiteHOUSTON, June 4, 2013 – The International Association of Innovation Professionals, the world’s only innovation certification body, has selected Tendenci (www.tendenci.com), the open source Content Management System (CMS) for nonprofit organizations (NPOs), to power its new website, www.iaoip.org. The new website was developed using one of Tendenci’s design templates by Schipul - The Web Marketing Company (www.schipul.com), a leading Web marketing and software development company based in Houston.

Schipul released Tendenci CMS as an open source product to give NPOs such as the International Association of Innovation Professionals greater control over their online presence.

The International Association of Innovation Professionals provides members with the knowledge, skills and opportunities to deliver innovation in their respective industries or fields. Through its new website, the association promotes and organizes working groups and conferences, as well as advancing innovation through professional certifications. The website includes an online membership application with online payment, a job board for posting positions and easily searching for listed jobs, and calendar event management capabilities to promote and manage registration and payment for upcoming events.

Schipul to Offer Online Fundraising Tips at 2013 Nonprofit Technology Conference

NTC Panel - Level Up Your Online Fundraising

Presentation to examine the psychology of why people donate

HOUSTON, April 9, 2013 – A team from Schipul Technologies, (www.schipul.com), an open source software development company and creators of the Tendenci open source CMS for nonprofit organizations (NPOs), will present, “Level Up Your Fundraising: Understanding the Psychology of What Makes People Donate,” at the 2013 Nonprofit Technology Conference. The presentation will focus on the challenge of engaging website visitors and motivating them to take action – whether through online donations, event registration, membership signup, or any of the many types of online transactions available on NPO websites.

The 2013 Nonprofit Technology Conference will bring together nonprofit professionals from around the world to collaborate, innovate and maximize effectiveness using various technology tools. The event is organized by the Nonprofit Technolgy Network (NTEN). Schipul’s speakers will include Vice President of Professional Services, Aaron Long, Marketing Manager Caitlin Kaluza, and Tendenci Community Curator Sarah Worthy.

Online giving increased nearly 11 percent in 2012 compared to 2011, but it still represents less than 10 percent of total fundraising revenue. The Schipul team will offer easily implemented tips for nonprofits to accelerate growth in online fundraising.

“Successful nonprofits need more than a website and social media profiles, they need the information site visitors are seeking, in a format they can navigate, and they must present information in a way that prompts visitors to take action,” said Long. “We will discuss some of the common mistakes made by many nonprofits that make it difficult for supporters to donate online, and we’ll offer seven tips for using psychology in online marketing to increase online fundraising.”

Research from Nielsen Norman Group found that it is harder to give money to nonprofit organizations than it is to spend money shopping online. Completing the donation process online took users in their study seven percent longer on average than it took users to complete an e-commerce checkout process. A separate study found that in 17 percent of the nonprofit websites evaluated, users could not find where to make a donation.

The Schipul team will present, “Level Up Your Fundraising: Understanding the Psychology of What Makes People Donate,” at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 13th. The 2013 Nonprofit Technology Conference runs April 11 – 13 at the Minneapolis Hilton and Minnesota Convention Center in Minneapolis.

Schipul’s Sarah Worthy to Tackle Mental Health Crowdsourcing at the 2013 SXSW® Interactive Festival

Crowdsourcing set to revolutionize mental health research and care

Sarah Worthy with TendenciHOUSTON, March 7, 2013 – Schipul Technologies, (www.schipul.com), an open source software development company and creators of the Tendenci open source CMS for associations, announced today that Sarah M. Worthy will moderate the Core Conversation, “How to Crowdsource Your Mental Health for Free,” at the SXSW Interactive Festival. The session will provide insights on how access to and sharing of information can help to improve diagnoses, reduce treatment costs, decrease the length of treatment and enable individuals with mental illness to live a healthy and balanced life.

Recent tragedies in the news shined the spotlight on the nation’s flawed system of care for the mentally ill. Experts say mental health care continues to be hampered by budget cuts, closures, battles with insurers and stigma. Worthy, along with Data Scientist Dharol Tankersley, PhD, will describe how the patient community can take an active role of their care and seize greater control over their situation.

“Crowdsourcing can do something for you that nothing else can – it compliments traditional psychiatric medicine in new and powerful ways,” said Worthy. “Just as crowdsourcing has revolutionized technology, creative services, travel and other industries, it will revolutionize health research and care. Crowdsourcing is a way to get the information into the hands of doctors, patients and families – and to provide a way for them to share with the community and contribute to solutions.”

The session will also address ways to protect privacy, including how to ensure mental health records and personal information is not revealed on the Internet.

“How to Crowdsource Your Mental Health for Free,” is scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday, March 11th at the Sheraton Austin, during the 20th annual SXSW Interactive Festival in Austin, Texas from March 8-12, 2013.

An incubator of cutting-edge technologies and digital creativity, the SXSW Interactive Festival features five days of compelling presentations from the brightest minds in emerging technology, scores of exciting networking events hosted by industry leaders and an unbeatable line-up of special programs showcasing the best new websites, video games and startup ideas the community has to offer.

Schipul - The Web Marketing Company CEO Ed Schipul to Present at 2012 PRSA International Conference

Will discuss the challenges and opportunities of brevity

Ed Schipul, President and CEO of TendenciHOUSTON, October 10, 2012
– Schipul - The Web Marketing Company (www.schipul.com), a leading Web marketing and software development company, today announced that President and CEO Ed Schipul will present, “Micro Blogs: How to Tell a Story on a Dime,” at the 2012 Public Relations of America (PRSA) International Conference. The presentation will examine the push toward communications that can be quickly disseminated, consumed and shared, and the implications for public relations professionals.

Texting, tweeting, Facebook posts and Instagram photo captions are all illustrations of the trend toward brief written communication. They can be written, disseminated, consumed and shared in seconds, creating enormous opportunities for organizations seeking to connect and strengthen relationships with a range of communities. Schipul’s presentation will examine these trends and the hottest micro blogging platforms, and describe best practices in brief storytelling that get results.

“If you want your community to understand what your organization stands for, remember it and share it, you have to strategically determine which social tools align best with your brand, given their strengths and audience, and make your communication brief,” said Schipul. “Brevity seems simple, but powerful brief storytelling requires an underlying strategy, excellent writing skill and great editing.”

Brevity is especially essential in reaching and engaging younger communities. According to the Pew Research Center’s Internet and Life Project, 95 percent of 18-29 year olds say they use the text messaging feature on their phones, and these users send or receive an average of 87.7 text messages on a normal day. Those between the ages of 18 and 24 send or receive an average of 109.5 messages every day.

The PRSA International Conference features more than 80 professional development sessions and is expected to attract approximately 3,000 public relations professionals and students. Keynote presenters for the 2012 PRSA International Conference include Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone, Tim Westergren, founder and chief strategy officer of Pandora, June Cotte, Ph.D., consumer behavioral expert, and Michael Steele, a political analyst with MSNBC.

The theme of the 2012 PRSA International Conference is, “The Future Starts Now.” The conference will be held October 13-16 at San Francisco Marriott Marquis. Schipul’s presentation is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on October 16th. To register online, visit https://www.prsa.org/.

Dharol Tankersley of Schipul – The Web Marketing Company to Discuss Neuromarketing at 2012 Interactive Strategies Conference

Presentation to examine the inner-workings of human desire

Dharol Tankersley with SchipulHOUSTON, September 24, 2012
– Marketing may not be brain surgery, but it appears to be getting closer. Schipul – The Web Marketing Company (www.schipul.com), a leading Web marketing and software development company, today announced that Data Analyst Dharol Tankersley, PhD, will present, “Neuromarketing – What it is, What it can predict, and Where it falls short,” at the 2012 Interactive Strategies Conference. The theme of this year’s conference, presented by the Houston Interactive Marketing Association, is “Psych! Marketing to the Mind,” which explores why people make decisions and behave the way they do.

Neuromarketers believe they can tap into the subconscious reactions people have to branding and advertising by analyzing brain activity and, by doing so, go a step beyond traditional research techniques. Tankersley spent 10 years as a cognitive neuroscientist designing and conducting studies of people’s brain activity during decision making and social interaction. As a graduate student at Duke University Medical Center, Tankersley was the lead study investigator in research that discovered that activation of a particular brain region predicts whether people tend to be selfish or altruistic.

“I am excited that neuroscience is moving from the laboratory to Main Street – or at least to Madison Avenue,” said Tankersley. “We will discuss what neuromarketers are really measuring and showcase both the promise and limitations of neuroscience in addressing marketing problems. The more we use available tools to understand human desire, the more precisely and accurately we will be in predicting and potentially modifying humans wants.”

Companies such as A & E Television, CBS, Disney, Frito-Lay and Google, as well as some political campaigns, have used neuromarketing to test consumer impressions.

Although increased activity in the brain doesn’t necessarily mean increased preference for a product, the idea that marketers could seek to manipulate subconscious brain activity to sell products and services is not without its critics. Some consumer advocates have called the discipline, “brandwashing” – a combination of branding and brainwashing – because it tinkers with aspects of consumer behavior of which those consumers are not aware.

Keynote presenters for the 2012 Interactive Strategies Conference include Nikki Pfarr, a researcher and strategist at the Seattle-based product design company Artefact and Beverly Flaxington, author of “Understanding Other People: The Five Secrets to Human Behavior.”

The 2012 Interactive Strategies Conference will be held October 3, 2012 at Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business. Tankersley’s presentation is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. To register online, visit http://www.is-conference.com/register/.
