Tendenci CEO to Present Solutions for Web Accessibility at 2014 SXSW Interactive Festival

Ed Schipul will provide actionable tools and design strategies

Tendenci at SXSW InteractiveHOUSTON, February 24, 2014 – Tendenci (www.tendenci.com), the software development company spearheading the Tendenci® Open Source Content Management System (CMS) project for associations and other nonprofits, today announced that CEO Ed Schipul will co-present the session, "Turning a Blind Eye to Good Usability," at the 2014 SXSW Interactive Festival. Joining Schipul will be blind motivational speaker Rachel Magario who is an Assistive Technology Specialist at PACER Center's Simon Technology Center. The workshop will provide disability accessible solutions for website design.

Access to the Internet is a necessary resource to nearly every aspect of life: education, employment, government, commerce, healthcare and recreation. For people with disabilities to have equal opportunities, it is essential they have equal usability to the Internet and to websites. Schipul and Magario will present what online accessibility really means for both the visually impaired end user and to the web designer. The session will cover best practices, implementing accessible web design, testing and design pitfalls to avoid.

"The Internet can be a level playing field for all people – regardless of physical ability – which has empowered countless men and women with disabilities to participate in society in ways they never could before: as entrepreneurs, employees, advocates and activists," said Schipul. "It is inexcusable that many websites and apps continue to be developed with unnecessary and harmful obstacles to accessibility. Our goal is to show how easy accessibility can be to achieve."

For those who are blind, screen-reading software can open the door to the Web's vast information resources. A screen reader converts a Web site to text and then reads it out loud to the person using it. Unfortunately, many Web designers and developers fall into a trap of thinking that adding alt text to images is enough to make websites "accessible."

A typical approach to Web accessibility is to "repair" a website design that is already published, which often results in the site remaining functionally unusable by many people with disabilities. User-centered design practices avoid this problem by focusing on the functional requirements that improve access to all users. They are inspired by the needs of people with disabilities but are designed to give all users more options and control when accessing Web resources.

Turning a Blind Eye to Good Usability is by reservation only and is scheduled for 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM Tuesday, March 11th in Classroom 105 of the AT&T Conference Center, 1900 University Avenue in Austin, Texas. Ronald McDonald House Houston Upgrades Website Using Tendenci® Open Source CMS Platform

Website targets families, volunteers and donors with information tailored to their interests

Ronald McDonald House Houston offers a safe and loving environment to provide care, compassion and hope to families whose children are being treated at Texas Medical Center member institutions for life threatening conditions. Over its 32 years, the organization has expanded to encompass 86 bedrooms at 8 locations throughout the Texas Medical Center. Tendenci® Open Source CMS Website Expected to Play Key Role in Rotary Firefighters Home Fundraising Effort

Campaign encourages online community to respond to housing needs of ailing firefighters

The Rotary has kicked off a $15 million fundraising effort and launched a new website, http://rotaryfirefightershome.org/, powered by Tendenci to spearhead the initiative.

Tendenci is the first open source CMS built for cause-related organizations such as the Rotary Firefighters Home fundraising campaign. Health insurance typically does not cover lodging expenses, and the cost of hotels and short-term housing can be crippling for patients and families coming to Houston for treatment. The Rotary Club of the University Area has undertaken the project of providing housing to professional and volunteer firefighters and other first responders at little or no cost for use while they undergo treatment at the TMC for any on-the-job injury or resulting work-related medical condition.

Rice University’s Baker Institute Selects Tendenci® Open Source CMS

 

Baker-Institute.pngHOUSTON, October 15, 2013 – Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, one of the premier nonpartisan public policy think tanks in the country, has kicked its visibility efforts into high gear by launching a dynamic new website, http://bakerinstitute.org/, powered by Tendenci (www.tendenci.com), the open source Content Management System (CMS) for cause-related organizations. The goal of the upgrade was to redefine how the Web can be used to connect the work of think tank researchers to the array of outcomes of their work – and tie it all back to real time events percolating around the globe.

The website, featuring more than 1,000 pieces of research, 800 videos and hundreds of events, was designed and developed by Schipul – the Web Marketing Company (www.schipul.com).

“We are looking to make a bold statement, build awareness and ensure our online presence conveys to the world how strong the work is that we do,” said Ryan Kirksey, director of operations and finance with Rice University’s Baker Institute. “As an open source solution, this platform gives us freedom to develop and maintain the site however we choose.”

Will discuss generational trends in working with developers

Ed Schipul, President and CEO of TendenciHOUSTON, July 22, 2013 – Schipul - The Web Marketing Company (www.schipul.com), a leading Web marketing and software development company, today announced that President and CEO Ed Schipul will address the nuances of generational trends in working with developers at Ignite OSCON 2013, which is part of the open source convention OSCON, in Portland, Ore.

In the talk entitled, “‘Old Developers Just Don’t Get it.’ ‘Yes They Do.’ ‘No They Don’t.’,” Schipul will share his firsthand experience on working with and leading teams of developers over the years, including tips for tapping into the core things that motivate all people regardless of the generation to which they belong.

“Developers of different generations require a different approach to gather their input and secure their buy-in,” said Schipul, describing himself as a Gen-Xer and the “old guy” on his team. “Their wants, needs and expectations are different across generational lines, but at the same time they were all drawn to programming because they love to create. That passion is common ground that motivates developers no matter their age.” 

Schipul cites recent studies that show that startups prefer young inexperienced developers because of their cost and flexibility. This bias is not only discriminatory; it can be self-destructive by ignoring the benefits of a cross-generational workforce. For instance, according to a study released earlier this year, middle-aged developers are driving cloud computing, the biggest tech trend since the advent of tablets and the mobile Web.

“Of course, trends are built on generalizations sprinkled with kernels of truth. Knowing and understanding both elements helps draw the most from team participants,” Schipul said. “I’ll also share some amusing anecdotes I’ve accumulated along the way.”

OSCON, which runs July 22-26, focuses on bringing together business and the open source community. Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans Launches Upgraded Website Powered by Tendenci® CMS Platform

Content Management System purpose-built for nonprofits provides "absolute control"

AAMA.jpgHOUSTON, June 25, 2013 – The Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans (AAMA), which inspires and empowers at-risk Latinos to pursue their potential and achieve success, today announced the launch of its upgraded website, http://www.aama.org. The site is powered by Tendenci (www.tendenci.com), the open source Content Management System (CMS) for nonprofit organizations (NPOs).

To give NPOs such as AAMA greater control over their online presence, Tendenci CMS was released as an open source product last year. AAMA's upgraded website was designed by Schipul - The Web Marketing Company (www.schipul.com), a leading Web marketing and software development company based in Houston.

"With Tendenci, we have absolute control over all our content – from the rotator on the home page to way events are promoted," said Kathryn Butcher, vice president, public relations with AAMA. "We want to encourage frequent visits from people who care about at-risk Latinos, so the new website is dynamic and designed to be updated frequently. We are very pleased."

Like many nonprofit organization websites, the AAMA site needs to interact with multiple audiences without being confusing or overly complicated. In addition to the main website that provides information to volunteers, financial contributors and others interested in helping Latinos become productive contributors, the upgrade included the development of a subsidiary site for AAMA's Sanchez Charter School, which provides critical information to current and prospective students and their families.

"It was essential that the website make it easy for the school staff to take ownership of their own content without sacrificing consistency with the main AAMA site in terms of branding or how the story is told," said Butcher. "The Schipul team came up with a good solution that ensures the school site can focus on things that matter to the school community and the main AAMA site can focus on the overall mission of the organization."

The website features prominent buttons encouraging visitors to donate and to sign up for AAMA's newsletter. It utilizes Tendenci's calendar event management capabilities to promote and manage registration and payment (when applicable) for upcoming events. The upgraded website also features digital media management package that makes it easy for the association to upload and share photos as well as a job board for posting positions and easily searching for listed jobs.

Tendenci® CMS Platform Powers New Website for International Association of Innovation Professionals

Website essential for membership management and recruitment for startup association

Schipul released Tendenci CMS as an open source product to give NPOs such as the International Association of Innovation Professionals greater control over their online presence.

Through its new website, the association promotes and organizes working groups and conferences, as well as advancing innovation through professional certifications. The website includes an online membership application with online payment, a job board for posting positions and easily searching for listed jobs, and calendar event management capabilities to promote and manage registration and payment for upcoming events.
