Tendenci CEO to Present Solutions for Web Accessibility at 2014 SXSW Interactive Festival

Ed Schipul will provide actionable tools and design strategies

Tendenci at SXSW InteractiveHOUSTON, February 24, 2014 – Tendenci (www.tendenci.com), the software development company spearheading the Tendenci® Open Source Content Management System (CMS) project for associations and other nonprofits, today announced that CEO Ed Schipul will co-present the session, "Turning a Blind Eye to Good Usability," at the 2014 SXSW Interactive Festival. Joining Schipul will be blind motivational speaker Rachel Magario who is an Assistive Technology Specialist at PACER Center's Simon Technology Center. The workshop will provide disability accessible solutions for website design.

Access to the Internet is a necessary resource to nearly every aspect of life: education, employment, government, commerce, healthcare and recreation. For people with disabilities to have equal opportunities, it is essential they have equal usability to the Internet and to websites. Schipul and Magario will present what online accessibility really means for both the visually impaired end user and to the web designer. The session will cover best practices, implementing accessible web design, testing and design pitfalls to avoid.

"The Internet can be a level playing field for all people – regardless of physical ability – which has empowered countless men and women with disabilities to participate in society in ways they never could before: as entrepreneurs, employees, advocates and activists," said Schipul. "It is inexcusable that many websites and apps continue to be developed with unnecessary and harmful obstacles to accessibility. Our goal is to show how easy accessibility can be to achieve."

For those who are blind, screen-reading software can open the door to the Web's vast information resources. A screen reader converts a Web site to text and then reads it out loud to the person using it. Unfortunately, many Web designers and developers fall into a trap of thinking that adding alt text to images is enough to make websites "accessible."

A typical approach to Web accessibility is to "repair" a website design that is already published, which often results in the site remaining functionally unusable by many people with disabilities. User-centered design practices avoid this problem by focusing on the functional requirements that improve access to all users. They are inspired by the needs of people with disabilities but are designed to give all users more options and control when accessing Web resources.

Turning a Blind Eye to Good Usability is by reservation only and is scheduled for 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM Tuesday, March 11th in Classroom 105 of the AT&T Conference Center, 1900 University Avenue in Austin, Texas. Attendees will need a valid SXSW badge, and an activated SXSocial account.

The 2014 SXSW Interactive Festival runs March 7th through March 11th. It is an incubator of cutting-edge technologies and digital creativity.

Tendenci® Open Source CMS Website Expected to Play Key Role in Rotary Firefighters Home Fundraising Effort

Campaign encourages online community to respond to housing needs of ailing firefighters

The Rotary Club of the University Area has undertaken the project of providing housing to professional and volunteer firefighters and other first responders at little or no cost for use while they undergo treatment at the TMC for any on-the-job injury or resulting work-related medical condition.

Schipul to Offer Online Fundraising Tips at 2013 Nonprofit Technology Conference

HOUSTON, April 9, 2013 – A team from Schipul Technologies, (www.schipul.com), an open source software development company and creators of the Tendenci open source CMS for nonprofit organizations (NPOs), will present, “Level Up Your Fundraising: Understanding the Psychology of What Makes People Donate,” at the 2013 Nonprofit Technology Conference. The presentation will focus on the challenge of engaging website visitors and motivating them to take action – whether through online donations, event registration, membership signup, or any of the many types of online transactions available on NPO websites.

The 2013 Nonprofit Technology Conference will bring together nonprofit professionals from around the world to collaborate, innovate and maximize effectiveness using various technology tools. The event is organized by the Nonprofit Technolgy Network (NTEN). Schipul’s speakers will include Vice President of Professional Services, Aaron Long, Marketing Manager Caitlin Kaluza, and Tendenci Community Curator Sarah Worthy.

Online giving increased nearly 11 percent in 2012 compared to 2011, but it still represents less than 10 percent of total fundraising revenue. The Schipul team will offer easily implemented tips for nonprofits to accelerate growth in online fundraising.

“Successful nonprofits need more than a website and social media profiles, they need the information site visitors are seeking, in a format they can navigate, and they must present information in a way that prompts visitors to take action,” said Long. “We will discuss some of the common mistakes made by many nonprofits that make it difficult for supporters to donate online, and we’ll offer seven tips for using psychology in online marketing to increase online fundraising.”

Research from Nielsen Norman Group found that it is harder to give money to nonprofit organizations than it is to spend money shopping online. Completing the donation process online took users in their study seven percent longer on average than it took users to complete an e-commerce checkout process. A separate study found that in 17 percent of the nonprofit websites evaluated, users could not find where to make a donation.

What’s Involved in Upgrading from Tendenci 4.0 to Tendenci 5.0?

The newest version of Tendenci (Tendenci 5.0) is a rebuild of Tendenci from the ground up using the latest and most scalable new technologies. Tendenci 5.0 includes more features and ability to customize based on each organization's needs. We recommend that all of our clients on Tendenci 4.0 begin planning the upgrade to the latest version of your website software as soon as possible.

The migration and CMS upgrade has a fairly large cost associated with it, particularly if your organization has a large amount of content, users and members, or files and images on your current website.  Migrating your content requires anywhere from a dozen to 50 or 60 hours from someone in programming because the technologies have changed so much between the 2 different versions.
