Sixteen, count 'em, sixteen. Note the one in the foreground with the blood and missing feathers. The groundskeepers occasionally find single eggs and they put them in the nest of a nesting hen. For some reason, she will set the egg and not bother the hatchling for a couple of days, then she attacks with a vengeance. Another hen adopted this hatchling.
It took about 8 hours for these to hatch. They were about 4 or 5 hours along when
I arrived that morning.
