The easiest way to track traffic coming from your Tendenci newsletter is by using the Google Analytics URL builder tool.
How does it work?
Use the Google URL Builder tool to add tags on the end of your URLs so when people click from your newsletter to your website, Google knows exactly where they came from.
To get started
Visit the link:
You will need to add tagging for each URL in your newsletter that you want to track. This can be a little tedious, but is the best way to view the information.
Fill in all the required fields:
- Paste the URL into the URL field
- Add campaign source: newsletter
- Add campaign medium: email
- Add campaign name: whatever differentiates this specific newsletter (i.e. May2009)
Your link will look something like:
Remember: everything after the question mark is tracking code for Google.
NOTE: If your URL already has a question mark in it - you only need the first question mark and can swap out the question mark generated by the tool to be an AMPERSAND.
Looking at the results in Google Analytics
In Google Analytics, go to Traffic Sources. Click to view the full list if your newsletter does not show up in the top 5.
Your newsletter will be tagged by whatever you used as the campaign name above.
You can click here to segment out these visitors, see what links they clicked on, how long they spent on your site, how many clicked through to your site, etc. You can also get an idea of how long it takes your users to open your newsletter. Often business-related newsletters get opens for 24-48 hours, and personal or recreational newsletters have a longer life.
