Helpful notes on running linux updates

Force package updates if Apt-Get (Aptitude) holds them back on Ubuntu

Use at your own risk for stability but better than a version upgrade of a stable system. If you are getting an error message that security updates are held back when you run the usual command on Ubuntu:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y

Doesn't resolve it. Of course you are doing this at your own risk, but if such a situation should arise, here is how to force an upgrade on held-back packages that are a security risk. (All credit goes to the link at the bottom from Stack Overflow.)

sudo aptitude

If you have kept back package you should see Upgradable Packages on top of the list.

Hit + on that list
Hit g twice
Answer debconf stuff if asked
Press return to continue
Press Q
Press yes

Your kept back package installed."

Another Option

sudo aptitude full-upgrade
