Data Residency

From the source: aws
Data residency is the requirement process and the storing of data in an IT system that needs to be contained in a specific geolocation. That geolocation could be a country, state, municipality, or it can be a set of buildings that your organization needs to comply with.

There are usually three main reasons that drive data residency. From the source YouTube

  • Regulatory requirements - businesses, and public sector organizations that require the data to be resident in a particular location for legislative reasons.
  • Contractual agreements - that customers have with their customers that want the data to not go beyond certain boundaries.
  • Corporate policies - information security policies, such as licensing terms, that require you to retain the data in specific locations.
