Tendenci® Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. Will you contact our database users directly by e-mail or sell it to a third party?
No. Your data is your data. We help keep an eye on things like performance and can help troubleshoot issues, but we would never market to your clients.

  2. If we choose to switch to another vendor can we export data?
Yes. With the right security level you can export data at any time.

  3. How much does it cost to upgrade to the next release?
Our current policy for hosted clients is to include software upgrades. No "surprise" invoices. Enterprise clients pay a yearly license fee that also includes upgrades.

  4. Who has rights to the design of my web site?
You have rights to the design elements of your web site (images and text) and may use them in the future and on other marketing projects as long as it is within the restrictions of the third party image providers (Veer, ImageSource, etc).

  5. When a new module is added to Tendenci® do we have to purchase it?
Hosted Tendenci® clients get access to all new modules at this time as part of the normal upgrade process.

  6. I just want the __xyz__ module. Can I just license that one?
At this time we license the entire package and just hide or push to the background modules that you don't see a need for. The hosted license pricing is reasonable as is so you might find you can afford it regardless.

  7. Do you have any testimonials from Tendenci® users?
Please read our Tendenci® client testimonials page. You may also be interested in reading this web based Membership Management Software case study.

  8. How long does it take to launch a Tendenci® web site?
A typical full design Web site project takes 30 to 60 days - much of this depends on how quickly you are able to provide the necessary content to go-live with your site. We are technically able to launch a Web site with Tendenci in 90 seconds. Ask us how!

  9. Do you offer 24x7 support?
Yes. Premium support contracts are also available.

  10. Do you work with third party web masters to run hosted web sites?
Yes! We love our resellers and web masters who are constantly pushing us to improve the Tendenci® software. In fact, many of the improvements in the software come from feedback from the unique group of people who interact with users on a daily basis and can challenge our programmers as well.

  11. Our web site already has a great design, can we just license the software and move hosting to save on set up costs?
Yes. And you can have another design company create the look and feel if you have a good relationship with them. We would be happy to recruit more agencies as resellers as well!

  12. What languages are supported in Tendenci®?
At this time it is in English and portions have been translated into Spanish. There are no technical obstacles to further translation, it is just a matter of having a group of clients fund specific language translations.

  13. What is the technology behind Tendenci®?
Tendenci® is a collection of script files and components that interact with Macromedia Dreamweaver templates and large relational databases. Microsoft SQL Server typically powers Tendenci® hosted web sites but there are no obstacles to porting it to other popular database formats.

  14. Where was the code written?
By Schipul's programming team in Houston Texas, USA.

  15. Is Tendenci® secure?
Security is a process and we are obsessed with it. We work on a daily basis to maintain tight security guidelines and to extensively test the Tendenci® application software. Yes the software is secure, but making guarantees is like waving a red flag in front of a bull; it is just not a good idea.

  16. Is Tendenci open source?
No, Tendenci is not open source.  Like many other propietary products like Google and Yahoo!, Tendenci is proprietary.

However, Tendenci couldn't exist without the use of open source products in our enterprise:
    • Python
    • Snort
    • Gimp
    • NVU

  17. Can we get a copy of the source code in escrow in case something happens to Schipul?
Yes, enterprise clients can sign an escrow agreement. Hosted clients can sign an escrow agreement and pay a fee. But we plan to be around for a while and we maintain off site backups so you are in good hands.

  18. Can the Schipul team pass security clearances?
We can and we have, although that is not our primary target market.

  19. Will Schipul handle the DNS requests and other technical requests to upgrade our web site?
Yes. We will work with your team to make the transition as smooth as possible.

  20. We have a consultant (or we are the consultant) who runs our Web site now. What happens if we switch to Tendenci?
Most Tendenci clients have a Web master that also manages the day-to-day affairs of the organization. The process of managing the transition from "e-mail me, and I will post your information," to users authoring content directly and adding events directly to the site, with optional approvals from the Web master. The work is simplified and distributed to the stakeholders in the organization. It rocks!
